City have gone somewhat under the radar this season with defeats to Leicester and Spurs seeing them falling behind the pack early on.

Since that 2-0 reverse at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November, however, City have found a new defensive resilience, conceding just twice in a seven-game unbeaten run and they reminded everyone of their credentials last weekend with three goals in a blistering 16 minute spell at Stamford Bridge.

They now face a run of six very winnable fixtures before a mouthwatering clash at Anfield in early February by which time they could be boosted by the return to fitness of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

Liverpool

Despite their romp to the title last season, Liverpool entered this campaign as second favourites with the bookies. So in that sense not much has changed.

However, after their last-minute victory over an until-then-unbeaten Tottenham side last month, it looked all but inevitable they would run out as winners again.

But a run of two draws and a defeat to Newcastle, West Brom and Southampton has seen confidence dip in the champions’ strength.

Injuries to their three most senior centre-backs clearly have not helped matters and the FA Cup weekend will at least give Jurgen Klopp a chance to rest some of his tired first-team stars.

Clashes against Manchester United, Tottenham and City in the next month will then present a serious test of the champions’ mettle.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side overcame a wobbly start to emerge as somewhat unlikely contenders for the title this year.

A 6-1 defeat to Tottenham in October and disappointing 1-0 loss to out-of-form Arsenal – coupled with their exit from the Champions League – put Solskjaer under serious pressure but a 10-match unbeaten run in the league has taken United level on points with leaders Liverpool with a game in hand.

Defeat in the Carabao Cup semi-final to rivals Manchester City has dampened the mood slightly, however, and they have a huge clash at Anfield coming up which could go a long way to making or breaking their title challenge.

Tottenham

Spurs looked to be launching an unlikely title challenge with an unbeaten start to the season until back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Leicester brought them back down to earth.

Nevertheless, the relentless form of their deadly attacking duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min means they could well still be in the reckoning come May.

We should have a better idea of just how serious their title credentials are by this time next month with fixtures against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City to come.

Leicester

The Foxes continue to blow hot and cold under Brendan Rodgers – thrashing Man City one week and folding against West Ham the next – but they find themselves right in the mix with nearly half the season gone.

Much like their unlikely triumph in 2016, any march to the title this year is likely to rely on the continued form of Jamie Vardy although a supporting cast of Harvey Barnes, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans have begun to chip in too.

Leicester face some tricky fixtures in the next month against the likes of in-form Southampton and Everton plus the unpredictable Chelsea and Leeds before a clash with table-toppers Liverpool next month.

Chelsea were soaring this time in December, basking in the glow of a 17-match unbeaten run, with new signings performing well and progress secured in the Champions League.

But defeats to Everton, Wolves, Arsenal and City in their last seven has seen serious questions asked of their manager with his job now seemingly under threat.

The good news for Chelsea is that the next month of fixtures looks more straightforward, the bad news is if they do not put a serious winning run together then their title hopes will be all but over and their manager most likely out of a job.
