Men’s Singles Tournament

Wimbledon Betting Preview

Last year’s champion Novak Djokovic is favourite again to win his fifth Wimbledon tournament. The Serbian started off the year well by winning the Australian Open before bowing out at the semi-final stage of the second Grand Slam of the year, the French Open. His most likely challengers for this year’s title will be two familiar faces, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer. Djokovic is favourite for this year’s tournament at 6/4.

Rafa Nadal enters this tournament on a twelve match winning streak. He won the Italian Open and a record-breaking 12th French Open in recent weeks. The third seed reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year. He lost out in a five-set thriller with eventual winner Djokovic. The 33-year-old is 11/2 with Coral.

Roger Federer enters the tournament hoping to break his own record as the oldest winner of the competition. He last won this competition in 2017 but he’s in good form heading into this year’s tournament. He won the Halle Open last week for the tenth time beating David Goffin in the final. Of course it was a slow start to 2019, he exited the Australian Open at the 4th Round before reaching the semi-finals of the French Open. However, he has always excelled at Wimbledon and he will be confident of securing his ninth Wimbledon championship in two weeks time. Federer looks a good bet at 7/2.

Outside of the ‘Big 3’ there is a whole host of younger challengers aiming for the throne. The likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Nick Kyrgios and Matteo Berrettini will all be hopeful rather than expectant coming into this tournament. With the exception of Dominic Thiem, this group has struggled to put together a two-week stretch of top-quality tournament tennis. Thiem has reached the last two French Open finals but his best finish at Wimbledon was a 4th Round exit in 2017. One player who could be of interest to bettors is 19-year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. He dropped out at the semi-final stage of the Queens Championships last week. He’s also recently reached the finals of the Lyon Open and the Stuttgart Open. The Montreal teenager is a good each way bet at 33/1.

Our Tip: Roger Federer @ 7/2

Women’s Singles Tournament

The Women’s Tournament is very tough to call. There are a number of previous winners who will all fancy their chances of repeating their triumph. 11th seed Serena Williams is 11/2 with Coral to win it all again this year. Her last tournament success came all the way back in 2017 when she won the Australian Open while pregnant with her daughter Olympia. The powerful American has since suffered final defeats at Wimbledon and the US Open and time is running out for her to win a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title.

The favourite for this year tournament is Australia’s French Open champion Ashleigh Barty. Her odds of 9/2 reflect the openness of this year’s tournament. Her best performance to date at Wimbledon has been a third round exit in 2018 although she did win Junior Wimbledon in 2015.

Other contenders to be considered include Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka. 2018 Champion Kerber has struggled this year and dropped to No.6 in the rankings. Current No.1 Naomi Osaka will have to improve drastically on her previous Wimbledon showings if she is to have any chance of adding this Grand Slam title to her collection.

Betting

2018 French Open winner Simona Halep enters this year’s tournament as an outsider. She reached the semi-finals here all the way back in 2014. After a brilliant 2018 season she has struggled in 2019. Two WTA Finals have resulted in defeat but she has shown some form at the Eastbourne Championships. She beat her conqueror from last year’s tournament, Hsieh Su-wei, in straight sets. Halep looks primed for a long run at Wimbledon.
