Conventional ways to qualify for the WSOP
Satellites and Mega Satellites
Satellites are a lower-cost option to entering a tournament that allows someone to qualify for a larger buy-in for a fraction of the cost.
The most common type of satellite is the single-table satellite, where one winner emerges and claims a tournament ticket. There are also mega-satellites that run more like a multi-table tournament with the number of winners dependent on the prize pool generated by the entrants.
WSOP-organized events
According to Seth Palansky from the WSOP, new satellites will be released on WSOP.com each month before the series starts at the end of May.
The WSOP also has plans to introduce Main Event and online bracelet satellites beginning in March.
Last year at the Rio, single-table satellites would run once a table filled, and there were several regularly scheduled satellite tournaments. We can expect the live satellite schedule closer to WSOP kickoff in May.
Palansky also indicated the return of the popular 25 Seat Scramble would be once again making an appearance online this summer closer to the start of the Main Event.
Local Card Room Tournaments
Card rooms have been known to offer tournaments and other qualifying events. It’s always exciting to send local players to Nevada to represent their hometown. Some of these tournaments happen in conjunction with the WSOP, and some are a product of the casino.
